From the editors
Every October, the United States marks Italian American Heritage Month, honoring the generations of Italian immigrants and their descendants who helped shape American life: its cities and kitchens, its music and film, its art, labor, faith and politics.
This magazine carries the name of Amerigo Vespucci, the Florentine navigator whose first name the Americas still bear. So the month is close to home for us.
Through October we're publishing stories about Italian American life: family histories and neighborhood portraits, the musicians, filmmakers and writers who carried the culture forward, the food on the table, and the arguments over memory and identity that come with any heritage worth talking about.
